School-library volunteers already brought practical experience and commitment to their work. What they lacked was an accredited qualification recognising that experience. In 2015, Julia brought this need to ETDP SETA in Limpopo.
A partnership involving ETDP SETA, the provincial education department, Room to Read and the training provider created a 12-month Level 4 Library Practice Learnership. Twenty-five volunteers enrolled.
All 25 participants were declared competent and received certificates at Masemola High School on 30 May 2017. The programme connected professional recognition for adults with the community infrastructure that supports children’s reading.
Julia’s initiating advocacy sat within a collective effort. The programme recognised practical library experience through a formal qualification, marking an important milestone for its participants.
